Description | "Comet House" in Nashville, Tennessee. Rhoda Calvert Barnard (standing) on the porch next to her mother-in law Elizabeth Haywood Barnard (seated). Built by Edward Emerson Barnard in 1882, the house was partly paid for with five $200 prizes, which he received for discoveries of new comets. Philanthropist Hulbert Harrington Warner, founder of the Warner Observatory in Rochester, New York, sponsored the awards. The family lived at "Comet House" until the autumn of 1883 when they moved to a home on the campus of Vanderbilt University. The university's main building is in the background. |
